The Smithsonian Institution Chooses Insight Systems, Inc. to Uncover
Millions of Records in its Digital Asset Management System.
Arlington, VA, April 5, 2007

Insight Systems, Inc., a leading Washington DC-based provider of custom software solutions to information-intensive enterprises in private and public sectors, has been contracted by the Smithsonian Institution, Department of Photographic Services, to support a legacy Digital Asset Management system.

Digital Asset Management consists of tasks and decisions surrounding ingesting, annotating, cataloguing, storage and retrieval of digital assets, such as digital photographs, animations, videos and music. Digital Asset Management systems are computer software and/or hardware systems that aid in the process of digital asset management. The term "Digital Asset Management" (DAM) also refers to the protocol for downloading, renaming, backing up, rating, grouping, archiving, optimizing, maintaining, thinning and exporting files.

Insight will be supporting the Smithsonian Institution, whose holdings equate to 136.9 million objects. The Smithsonian Institution is a trust instrumentality of the United States founded in 1846 as “an Establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” In the 150+ years since that time the Smithsonian has grown to include 18 museums, the National Zoological Park, and 9 research centers located in Washington, DC and its metropolitan area, New York City, Cambridge, MA, Fort Pierce, FL, and Panama. The Smithsonian employs approximately 6,500 staff, has over 140 million collection objects, and in 2006, hosted over 25 million visitors at its core museum locations and 150 million visitors to its public websites.
